Keeping Gyms Disinfected

Each year, physical health prevails as the number one focus of new year’s resolutions. One study found that 50% of resolution makers set the goal of exercising more at the start of the new year. Because it’s common to see a spike in gym attendance each January, make sure you are prepared with the right cleaning procedures and products to limit the spread of germs and bacteria in your fitness facility.

Gym cleaning procedures
Gym staff and members need to be trained on proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures. The bulk of any cleaning should be placed on staff to better ensure that protocol is followed and decrease the risk for liability. Seeing staff clean throughout the day also boosts members’ confidence in their gym’s commitment to a healthy environment.

Educate gym members on small actions they can take to contribute to a more hygienic fitness facility. The National Academy for Sports Medicine recommends sharing a three-step procedure with members:

1.  Cover gym equipment with a towel during use.
2.  Wipe equipment with a disinfecting wipe after use.
3.  Wash hands at the end of a workout.

Gym cleaning products
The right cleaning products are equally as important as the right cleaning procedures. Modern gym equipment is equipped with quite a bit of technology to track fitness data during a workout. Spraying any sort of liquid near electric panels is sure to shorten the life of a piece of equipment, causing shorts and malfunctions. In addition, there is no way to prevent the spray from landing on other gym members.

The best use of disinfectant spray is for gym users to first spray their cleaning towel and then wipe equipment. However, this requires a willingness for members to follow protocol, as well as ongoing laundry services and extra cleaning supplies.

Disinfecting wipes are the safest and most effective way to keep gym equipment clean. The Monk® Stainless Steel Stand provides an attractive, all-in-one solution that provides staff and members with convenient access to Monk® Disinfecting Wipes. The wipes are dispensed through the top of the stand and can be discarded in the bottom. If floor space is an issue, pair the Monk® wall mount dispenser with a trash can for an out of the way disinfectant station.

COVID risk mitigation
A study done by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) revealed that 81% of surveyed gym members felt more confident in returning to the gym in the midst of COVID-19 thanks to additional cleaning and hygiene procedures.

As new strands of COVID-19 continue to spread, following correct disinfecting procedures should remain a priority. Products on the EPA’s List-N are proven effective against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID. If someone who is sick or diagnosed with COVID-19 has been in your gym in the last 24 hours, the CDC recommends using List-N products to disinfect the facility.
